The United Kingdom has been in the news a lot lately after last week’s vote to leave the European Union, a.k.a. Brexit. Marc, our teacher for the English/Math Brush Up class, asked EOC staff: “Do you know the difference between the UK, Great Britain, and England?” We sat around trying to figure it out.
So, do you know the difference?
If you are stumped, below is a video from the educational Youtube channel CGP Grey that explains the differences. The channel also has a video explaining the European Union, or at least its definition in 2013. The video is posted below as well. Hopefully, once the negotiations between the UK and EU are figured out, there will be another video to explain how it all works.
This past weekend held a lot of celebrations. Hope you had a Happy Father’s Day and a Happy Juneteenth! On June 19, 1865 news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas, and former slaves celebrated their freedom.
Here are three things fathers and children can do together this week in honor of June 19:
- Make tea cakes, a dessert tied to Juneteenth celebrations. Take a look at the NPR article on the history of tea cakes, as well as a link to a recipe.
- Read the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” which is commonly thought of as the Black American National Anthem. Find the tune and learn to sing the song.
- Talk together about what freedom means to each of you, and what it meant to the people of Texas in 1865.
